Alcan Adopts New Technology For Recycling Plant
Alcan Inc. will build an $180-million plant in Quebec to recycle spent potliner from aluminum smelters, using the company's proprietary technology. The spent material, which is removed from electrolytic cells during relining, containing carbon and various inert elements, will now be recyclable. Read more

FedEx Has Big Boost In Revenues
Corporate income is $8.54 billion for its first fiscal quarter, up 11% over last year's $7.71 billion, with FedEx Kinkos as the only business segment to show a decline. Read more

NAM To Establish China Business Task Force
On the same day the Washington, D.C.-based National Association of Manufacturers was complaining to the Bush Administration that China is not living up to its World Trade Organization obligations, the NAM's board directed the group's president, John Engler, to establish a new task force to work with U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson on Chinese currency flexibility. Research Advances Welding Robot Technology For Ships
The Defense Advanced Research Projects agency gave a $3.6 million grant to the University of New Orleans to develop automated tools for programming robots to weld ship components. The Office of Naval Research is funding the grant. Read more
