An Australian group that facilitates investment in new sustainable energy and greenhouse gas reduction technologies within the continent announced last month their latest project, a breakthrough in robotic MIG welding that "will increase welding speed and, consequently, boost productivity in the metal fabrication sector." Stainless Steel Buyers Face Tough Alternatives
Buyers of stainless steel are watching a tidal wave approach, and a recently announced price increase in exhaust-system grades is a tangible reason for them to seek out substitute materials. The specter of growing Chinese demand has loomed for years, and even as that country increases its installed capacity for quality stainless products, it has no domestic source of nickel, chromium, or other essential alloys to serve those new operations. More recently, the inevitable consolidation of the top nickel-mining firms (Xstrata/Falconbridge, Inco/Phelps Dodge) indicates future increases in the cost of those metals. Read more
