Machine Tool Orders Rise 22% In First Quarter
Gross new orders of metal-cutting and metal-forming machine tools for U.S. consumption totaled $849.09 million in the first quarter of this year, up 22.2% from new orders of $692.41 million during the first three months of 2005, according to statistics jointly released by AMT-The Association for Manufacturing Technology and the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association. Metro Machine To Close Shipyard
Metro Machine Corp., an employee-owned company, will close its Philadelphia shipyard by mid-July because of lack of work, says Richard Owen, plant manager. The shipyard will close after it completes its final job -- recycling the 445-ft.-long USS Stark, a guided-missile frigate. Read more


Bridgestone Aircraft Tire (USA) To Open Plant Near Greensboro, North Carolina
Bridgestone Aircraft Tire (USA) Inc. will open a plant in Rockingham County, N.C., investing $13.5 million over the next three years. The new facility will create 95 new jobs. The announcement was made possible in part by a $200,000 One North Carolina Fund grant. Read more
